Now that your loam is in and graded to your satisfaction, hydroseeding is the
next step in creating a beautiful lawn. Many hours of care and nurturing will
be required to create a magnificent lawn, so starting out with the best seeding
method possible is important. We use only the highest quality seed blends to
meet the needs of our customers. Combining this with superior application methods
makes Landscape Support Services the only choice for all your hydroseeding
needs.
What is Hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is an excellent time-tested method for seeding your
property. It has been used for many years as a superior method of
seeding bare ground areas. Seed, an organic starter fertilizer,
lime, plant fiber mulch and a tackifier are combined with water
in a tank mixture. This is then sprayed evenly over the freshly
raked area, and will begin to germinate within approximately 10
days.
The Advantages Over Hand Seeding are Many
- All materials required for good germination are
applied in one step.
- Spraying allows for a very even application, reducing
the need for reseeding bare spots later on.
- The plant fiber mulch helps to reduce erosion
and retains moisture essential for good germination.
- The mix is colored to give an appealing finished
look to the site until germination begins.
Some Common Misconceptions About Hydroseeding
- Hydroseeding comes in faster than hand seeding – Although
hydroseeding provides all the raw materials required for germination,
we use the same high quality seed mixes you would use if you
hand seeded the area. Germination rates are more a function
of soil temperature and moisture and seed genetics, than method
of application. Many companies will add annual seed to their
mixes to make it appear that they come up faster. These grasses
will die out by the end of the first season leaving your lawn
thinner than it might initially appear. It is important that
you ask what seed mix and application rate your contractor plans
on using regardless of application method
- Hydroseeding will reduce the amount of watering I will
need to do on my new lawn – Although the wood fiber mulch
in hydroseed will help to maintain an even amount of water available
to the grass seed, you will still need to water several times
a day during most conditions to have good success. If this is
not an option for you, there are products that can be added
to your application that will extent the length between watering.
Please contact a member of our staff prior to scheduling an
application to discuss the pros and cons of doing this.
- Hydroseeding creates a weed free lawn – As much as
we hope that this will be the case, hydroseeding is not responsible
for weeds and there for we can not guarantee this. All seed
varieties that we use are certified to be essentially weed free
prior to being sold. The weeds that may develop in your lawns
generally come in with the loam or are blown in from nearby
sites. This is something we have no control over. Some companies
have been known to offer weed control as part of their application,
beware of these claims. First, any weed control will inhibit
root growth, which is essential for your new lawn to mature
properly. Second, there is no product that we are aware of that
can be legally applied through a hydroseeder. Instead we recommend
the following steps should weeds come up in your new lawn. Many
weeds that appear in your new lawn will not withstand mowing
and will die off quickly after you begin mowing. The rest can
be controlled with a post emergent herbicide once you know your
lawn is off to a good start. We would be happy to help you choose
a lawn care program to compliment the needs of your new lawn,
when the time comes.
Still Unsure??
If this is of great concern to you, you may
want to consider Terraseeding, which uses a compost and seed mixture reducing
the potential for weeds in your new lawn. (You can learn more here)Link
